Light Indication

Probable Causes

Solution

All lights blink simultaneously. A non-recoverable error occurred. Turn the printer off, remove any optional plug-in cartridges, and turn the printer on. If the printer powers up properly, but will not power up with the optional plug-in cartridge, the plug-in cartridge is faulty. If the printer displays the error pattern without any optional plug-in cartridge installed, have the printer repaired.
BUSY light blinks. The printer has stopped printing, but there is more data in the printer buffer. Press the FF button to eject the last page from the printer.
BUSY and ONLINE lights blink. The printer detects a paper jam. Open the top cover and remove the OUT tray. Remove any paper from the IN tray. Press the up arrow button and remove any paper jammed around the paper feed rollers. Check for any obstructions blocking the paper path. Reload paper in the IN tray and try printing again.
ONLINE light blinks. The printer detects an out of paper condition. If the IN tray is out of paper, load paper in the IN tray and press the FF button. If the IN tray contains paper, clean the paper rollers with a lint-free cotton cloth slightly dampened with water. If the problem continues, have the printer repaired.

All Lights Blinking In An Alternating Pattern (Depending On The Grouping Of The Lights)

Grouped Front Panel Lights

Probable Causes

Solution

COUR 10/20 and ONLINE lights. The printer detects a carriage stall condition. Turn the printer off and unplug the power to the printer. Remove the Out Tray cover. (A common cause of carriage stalls is the Out Tray cover installed backwards on the Out Tray.) Remove any visible obstructions from the carriage path. Manually slide the carriage across the full length of the slide bar mechanism. Look for and eliminate possible causes of binding or obstruction. Plug in the power and turn the printer on. The carriage should move to the home position on the right side of the printer. Reinstall the Out Tray cover. Ensure the tallest portion of the cover is against the printer's lid. Print a self-test page. Turn the printer off, hold the Font button down on the Control Panel, then turn the printer on and release the Font button after the printer picks up paper.
COUR 10/20, COUR 16.67, and double pitch lights A printer electronics failure occurred. Have the printer repaired.
BUSY and ONLINE lights A printer electronics failure occurred. Have the printer repaired.
Landscape and DRAFT lights An optional plug-in cartridge failure occurred. Turn the printer off, remove any optional plug-in cartridges, and turn the printer on. If the printer powers up properly, but will not power up with the optional plug-in cartridge, the plug-in cartridge is faulty. If the printer displays the error pattern without any optional plug-in cartridge installed, have the printer repaired.
Double pitch, ONLINE, and DRAFT lights The printer detects an incompatible emulation cartridge. If an emulation cartridge is installed, verify that the cartridge is not the 22707E Epson emulation cartridge. This cartridge is only compatible with the HP DeskJet printer. Turn the printer off, remove the emulation cartridge, and turn the printer on. If the printer powers up properly, but will not power up with the emulation cartridge, the emulation cartridge is faulty. If the printer displays the error pattern without the emulation cartridge installed, have the printer repaired.
COUR 10/20 and COUR 16.67 lights The printer detects an optional RAM cartridge failure. Turn the printer off, remove the optional RAM cartridge, and turn the printer on. If the printer powers up properly, but will not power up with the optional RAM cartridge, the RAM cartridge is faulty. If the printer displays the error pattern without the optional RAM cartridge installed, have the printer repaired.
Other lights grouped together The printer detects a carriage stall or a printer failure occurred. Turn the printer off and unplug the power to the printer. Remove the Out Tray cover. Ready light is blinking. The printer detects an out-of-paper condition. If the In tray is out-of-paper, load paper in the printer and press the Load/Eject button. If the In tray contains paper, clean the paper feed rollers. If the problem continues, the printer needs to be repaired.
Change cartridge light is blinking. The printer is waiting for print cartridge to be changed or replaced. Change or replace the printer cartridge then press the Print Cartridge button.
Busy and change cartridge lights are blinking. The HP DeskJet 500C Printer detects a bad print cartridge or an interconnect problem (10 or more open connections).

Replace the optional plug-in cartridge. If all lights blink without any optional plug-in cartridges installed, the printer needs to be repaired.
Compress, ready, and draft lights are grouped together. The printer detects an incompatible emulation cartridge. The printer is incompatible with the optional plug-in emulation cartridges. If the problem occurs without an emulation cartridge installed, return the printer for repair.
Portrait and landscape lights are grouped together. The printer detects an optional RAM plug-in cartridge failure. If an optional RAM cartridge is installed, turn the printer off, remove the optional RAM cartridge, and turn the printer on. If the printer powers-up properly, replace the RAM cartridge. Retest with the new RAM cartridge. If the error continues, the printer needs to be repaired. If the printer displays this error without an optional RAM cartridge installed, the printer needs to be repaired.

Double Pitch, Online abd Draft grouped The printer detected an incompatible emulation cartridge. Verify the emulation cartridge is HP compatible and made specifically designed for the HP DeskJet PLUS and DeskJet 500 printers.
Landscape and Draft grouped An optional plug-in cartridge failure occurred. Turn the printer off, remove any optional cartridges, then turn the printer on. If the printer powers up properly the optional cartridge will need to be replaced. If the printer still doesn't power up the main PCA will have to be replaced.
On-line blinking The printer detected on out of paper condition. If the IN tray is out of paper, load paper in the printer and press FF button. If the IN tray contains paper, remove the paper and clean the paper feed rollers, then reload the paper. If the problem persists the paper sensor or the head driver PCA must be replaced.

Light Indication

Probable Causes

Solution

All blinking A non-recoverable error occurred. Turn the printer off, remove any optional cartridges, then turn the printer on. If the printer powers up properly the optional cartridge will need to be replaced. If the printer still doesn't power up the main PCA will have to be replaced.
Busy and Install Cartridge blinking The printer has detected a bad print cartridge or an interconnect problem. Horizontal rows of dots missing on printouts may be the result of a connection between the printer carriage contacts and the print cartridge contacts. This is known as an interconnect problem. Remove the cartridge and clean the contacts in the print carriage and on the print cartridge using a soft, lint free cloth moistened with water. DO NOT USE A COTTON SWAB. If the problem persists the print cartridge may be faulty. Replace as necessary.
Busy and Ready blinking The printer has detected a paper jam. Turn the printer off and remove any paper in the paper path.
Busy and Ready grouped An electronics failure has occured. The main PCA will have to be replaced.

Horizontal rows of dots missing on printouts may be the result of a connection between the printer carriage contacts and the print cartridge contacts. This is known as an interconnect problem. Remove the cartridge and clean the contacts in the print carriage and on the print cartridge using a soft, lint free cloth moistened with water. DO NOT USE A COTTON SWAB. DESKJET 540

Light Indication

Probable Causes

Solution

Power and Resume blinking The printer has detected a problem and is not ready to print. Verify the printer has a print cartridge and paper. Check for error such as a paper jam or cartridge stall.
Power and Resume blinking alternately Data communication error. Turn the printer off, cancel the print request and send the request again. If the problem persists, send another file. If the second document fails, verify host/printer connection. If the second document prints, the first document is corrupt.
The printer has detected a carriage stall condition. With the printer off, slide the carriage across the carriage rail. Remove any obstruction from the carriage path. Disconnecting then reconnecting the power module might be required to recover from a carriage stall.
The printer has detected a paper jam condition. Clear the paper jam by feeding paper through the paper path. Do not pull the paper out by force. With the printer on, open the access door and press and hold the Resume button. This will cause the drive rollers to move. Release the Resume button and press again to move the rollers in the opposite direction.
The computer to printer connection failed. Turn off the printer, check the printer cable, then turn the printer on. Send a file to the printer. If the printout is garbled, try another printer cable. Additionally, verify the proper printer driver and parallel port are selected.
Power and Resume off The printer is in an undefined state. Cycle the power. If the problem persists, the main PCA will have to be replaced.
The printer is not connected to an active power source. Verify that the powered receptacle is active. Make sure no additional switches or breakers are off, such as a switch on a power strip. Try a different power receptacle.
The printer or power module is faulty. Ensure the power module is seated in the printer power plug or connected to a powered receptacle. The power module might be faulty.
The power module is causing a problem. The power module is not the correct device for the country or region's power.
Power and Resume on The printer has failed. Cycle power. If the light indications recur, the main PCA will have to be replaced.
Power on and Resume blinking Media is improperly loaded in the printer. Reinstall the media making sure the paper length and width adjusters are firmly against the media stack. Make sure the media is not buckled in the IN tray. Verify the width adjustment lever is along the paper's left edge, pushing the right edge of the paper against the right wall.
Missing or incorrect print cartridge installed. Install a print cartridge. Make sure cartridge is fully snapped into place. Close the access door.
Printer "timed out" waiting for a form-feed command. Press the Resume button. The page should print and eject to the OUT tray.
The printer detected an empty ink cartridge. Replace the print cartridge and press the Resume button.
The printer has detected an out of paper condition. Load media in the IN tray and press Resume button.
