The resume light blinks or flashes. The black or color cartridge may be causing the error Turn the printer off, and disconnect the parallel cable from the printer.  Turn on the printer again.  The power light should be steady and not flashing or blinking.  Raise the printer top cover.  The Resume light should flash as the print cartridge carriage moves to the center of the printer.  With the printer's top cover open, verify both of the ink cartridges are installed.  Lower the top cover of the printer.  If the Resume light stops flashing and the print cartridge carriage returns to its home position at the far-right side of the printer, the printer has properly identified the ink cartridges.  Try to print a self-test by pressing and holding the RESUME button for five seconds.  If the Resume light continues to flash and the print cartridge carriage does not return to the home position, the ink cartridges have not established sufficient contact and have not been properly identified by the printer.  Raise the printer's top cover.  The ink cartridge carriage should be located in the center position.  Remove the ink cartridges. Unplug the printer from its power source.  Locate the ink cartridge part number on the front of the ink cartridge.  Verify the part numbers of the cartridges are the correct cartridges required in the printer: C6614A, 51649A, or C1816A (C1816A not valid for the 640C series).

How to clear paper jams

Pull the paper out of both the IN tray and the OUT tray.  Turn the printer off and on to allow the printer to clear the paper jam.  If the paper remains jammed, turn the printer back off and follow the remaining steps.  Open the top cover and remove the OUT tray.  Pull the jammed media out of the printer by grasping the middle section of the paper and pulling.  If several pieces of paper are all jammed together, try pulling out just one piece from the middle of the jammed stack to loosen the other pages.  Remove all torn pieces of paper from the paper path.  If the paper causing the jam is not visible and labels were recently printed, check to see if a label has come unglued from a label sheet while going through the printer.  Remove any wrinkled or torn media from the IN tray paper stack, re-square the paper, and reload the stack in the IN tray.  Replace the OUT tray and close the top cover.  Turn the printer on. If the lights no longer flash but the power light shows as solid green, print the document again.

Cleaning the print cartridges.

Use a clean, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with water.  Locate the copper-colored circuitry strip on the back of the cartridge.  Clean the copper-colored strip with the dampened swab or cloth.  Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the nozzle plate. Clean the carriage contacts on the back wall of the ink cartridge carriage with a damp, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth. Use a dry, foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth to remove the moisture from the contacts.  Plug the printer into a power source and turn on the printer.  Place the ink cartridges into the carriage and snap them into position.  Lower the printer's top cover.  If the resume light stops flashing and the print cartridge carriage returns to the home position at the far-right side of the printer, the printer has properly identified the ink cartridges. Print a self-test by pressing and holding the RESUME button for five seconds.  If the resume light continues to flash and the print cartridge carriage does not return to the home position, the printer will need to be repaired.

Missing Colors or the Wrong Color Prints

A color HP Inkjet cartridge may print the wrong colors or be missing colors.  This explains some of the reasons that a color cartridge may not print the colors correctly. This information applies to the following HP Inkjet color cartridges:

    • HP 51625A
    • HP 51641A
    • HP 51649A
    • HP C1823 series
    • HP C1816A
    • HP No. 17 (C6625AN)
    • HP No. 78 (C6578 series)
The problem could be related to configuration settings in the software program that is being used.  If the colors print correctly from one software program and print incorrectly from another, the software program is the problem.  Try changing some of the settings within the software program.  The color mode is not selected in software application or printer driver.  Select color mode instead of grayscale or monochrome mode in software application or printer driver.  The correct printer driver is not selected in software application.  Select the correct printer driver.  The problem may be caused by the colors in the cartridge accidentally mixing.  The print cartridge has three separate chambers, one for each of its three ink colors (cyan, yellow, and magenta).  The colors can become mixed when ink from one chamber finds its way in to another chamber.  The color cartridge may need to be cleaned (See cleaning instructions above).  The cartridge having been exposed to extreme temperature swings may have this problem.  The color cartridge may need to be replaced.

Color mixing can occur for several reasons. Any nonporous material placed in contact with the nozzle area can cause the inks to mix through a phenomenon know as capillary action. Generally, color mixing results from users reapplying tape to the nozzle area of the cartridge in an attempt to prolong its life. Once removed from a new print cartridge, the tape is not designed to be reapplied and is very likely to cause color mixing if it is reapplied.  Another common cause of color mixing is when the entire print cartridge is placed into a resealable plastic bag in an effort to keep the print cartridges from drying out. If the nozzle area comes into contact with the plastic bag, color mixing can result.  Color mixing can occur when a cartridge or printing system has been exposed to extreme temperature swings. Remember to keep cartridges inside their boxes stored in a place that is within the temperature span printed on the package. When cartridges are removed from the package, they should always be stored at room temperature.  If color mixing is the problem with the print cartridge, the print cartridge is probably permanently damaged and will need to be replaced. However, if the mixing did not occur over a long period of time, the output may improve with use. When color mixing occurs only in the printhead portion of the cartridge and does not contaminate the ink in the reservoir itself, the print quality may return too normal as the printer is used. If the print cartridge is new or if the color mixing has occurred even though nothing was allowed to come into contact with the nozzles, the tape placed on the nozzles during manufacture may have caused the problem. The tape over the nozzles will occasionally lift slightly during shipment, thereby providing a path for the inks to mix.

Maintaining the cartridge

The printer automatically performs priming, cleaning, and capping the cartridge to maintain optimum print quality. These operations are not visible to the user.

Proper use and handling will provide optimum print quality and print cartridge life. To keep the print cartridges in good, working order, print with your ink cartridge at least once a month to keep the nozzles clear.  Keep print cartridges sealed in the original packaging until ready to use. Ink can evaporate through the nozzles and the plastic pen cartridge body, reducing print cartridge life. Therefore, print cartridges have a longer life when sealed in the packaging.  After opening the print cartridge, store the cartridges in the printer in the "home position" to help prevent ink from drying out in the nozzles. This will minimize the risk of contamination with airborne dust particles.  Press the power button to turn off the printer, rather than unplugging the printer.  Store print cartridges at room temperature.  Store unopened print cartridges in an upright position.  Do not unplug the printer without turning off the power button first. Pressing the power button caps the cartridge in the service station, preventing ink from drying in the cartridge nozzles.  Do not re-tape the cartridge if you remove it from the printer. If you must remove a cartridge, store it at room temperature in a rigid sealed plastic container. Make sure that the nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge don't touch the side of the container.  Do not store the unopened cartridge on its side for long periods of time.
